How to calculate bounce rate

Bounce rate is the share of sessions in which a visitor viewed only one page and then left.

Bounce rate = single-page sessions ÷ total sessions × 100

Example: 6,600 single-page sessions out of 12,000 total sessions is a bounce rate of 55%.

What is a good bounce rate?

Rough bounce rate ranges
Bounce rateRough interpretation
Below 40% Excellent
41% to 55% Typical
56% to 70% High, worth investigating
Above 70% Very high, unless it is a single-page site or a blog

These ranges are rough guides. Blogs, landing pages and news sites naturally have higher bounce rates than shops or web apps.

Bounce rate in context

  • A high bounce rate is not always bad. A visitor who finds the answer on one page and leaves has still had a good visit.
  • Compare bounce rates by source, device and page rather than looking at one site-wide number.
  • Slow load times, mismatched content and intrusive pop-ups are common causes of high bounce rates.

Engagement metrics in Noralytic

Noralytic is cookieless, so it does not follow individual visits and does not report a bounce rate. Instead you see pageviews, visitors and pages per visitor, which show how deeply people explore your site, together with top pages and sources.
