How to calculate conversion rate

Conversion rate is the share of visitors who complete a goal, such as buying, signing up or sending a form.

Conversion rate = conversions ÷ visitors × 100

Example: 250 sign-ups from 10,000 visitors is a conversion rate of 2.5%.

What is a good conversion rate?

There is no single good number. It depends on your industry, traffic source, price and goal. Many websites see conversion rates between roughly 1% and 5%, while newsletter sign-ups or free trials can be higher and high-ticket purchases lower.

The most useful comparison is your own history: track your rate over time and test one change at a time.

Ways to improve your conversion rate

Match message and traffic

Make sure the page delivers what the ad, post or search result promised.

Speed up the page

Slow pages lose visitors before they even see your offer.

Simplify the next step

One clear call to action beats five competing ones.

Build trust

Reviews, clear pricing and privacy-friendly practices reduce hesitation.

Segment your traffic

Compare conversion rates by source to find your best channels.

Test one thing at a time

Change headlines, buttons or forms individually so you know what worked.

Track conversions without cookies

With Noralytic you can count goals using simple custom events, for example pa.track({ name: 'signup' }), and compare them with your visitor numbers. It works without cookies, so your numbers are not affected by cookie banners.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate conversion rate?

Divide the number of conversions by the number of visitors and multiply by 100.

What counts as a conversion?

Any goal you define: a purchase, a sign-up, a download, a contact form or a click on an important button.

Should I use visitors or sessions as the base?

Pick one and stay consistent. Using visitors answers "how many people converted", while sessions answers "how many visits converted".

Why is my conversion rate low?

Common reasons are mismatched traffic, slow pages, unclear offers and forms that are too long. Segment by source and test improvements one at a time.
