404 error tracking: find the pages that are missing

Every visitor who lands on a 404 page is a visitor you lose. Noralytic lists the addresses people could not find, ranked by how often, so you know what to redirect first.

What you see

Missing pages appear as events in your events report.

Events
404 /old-page24
404 /products/red11
404 /blog/moving7
Illustration with example data.
  • The address that was not found, for example "404 /old-page", without the query string
  • How often each missing page was reached in the selected period
  • Sorting and export like every other event
  • Combined with filters: filter the reports by the missing page to see where those visits came from

What you can do with it

Fix broken links

Find links on your site or on other websites that lead nowhere.

Plan redirects after a relaunch

See which old addresses are still in use and redirect them to the new pages.

Catch typos in campaigns

A mistyped link in a newsletter shows up as a 404 within minutes.

How it works

Tick "Pages that are not found (404)" under the tracking code in the website settings and copy the code again. When a page loads with the status 404, the script records one event with its path.

The detection needs a browser that reports the status of the page, which current Chrome, Edge and Firefox do. Soft 404 pages that answer with status 200 are not detected, so make sure your 404 page returns the real status.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find 404 errors with Noralytic?

Turn on 404 tracking in your website settings. Open the events report afterwards: every event starting with "404" is a missing page, with the number of times it was reached.

Is the 404 page also counted as a pageview?

Yes. The visit is counted like any other, and the missing page is recorded as an additional event.

How do I find out who links to a missing page?

Click the funnel next to the page in the pages report. Every report then shows only those visits, including the referrers.

Does it detect soft 404 pages?

No. A page that shows "not found" but answers with status 200 cannot be recognised. Configure your server or CMS to send the real 404 status.
