What you see

Both show up as events in your events report, so you can sort, filter, export and turn them into goals.

  • Outbound links: every click on a link to another website, counted per target domain, for example "outbound partner.example"
  • Downloads: clicks on links to files such as PDF, ZIP, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, CSV, MP3 or MP4, counted per file name, for example "download catalog.pdf"
  • Only the domain or the file name is recorded, never the full address and nothing about the visitor
  • Works with every page that carries your tracking code, including single-page apps

How it works

Tracking code with automatic link and download tracking
<script data-host="https://noralytic.com" src="https://noralytic.com/js/script.js?v=2" data-track="outbound downloads" id="ZwSg9rf6GA" async defer></script>

Open the settings of your website, tick "Clicks on links to other websites" and "Downloads" under the tracking code and copy the code again. The script then carries a data-track attribute. A small extra script is loaded only when you choose one of these options.

A link counts as outbound when its domain differs from the page, so a link from example.com to blog.example.com is outbound too. Links that your own code opens with JavaScript are not detected. Nothing is stored on the visitor's device.

Frequently asked questions

How do I track outbound link clicks?

Tick "Clicks on links to other websites" under the tracking code in your website settings and copy the new code into your site. Every click on a link to another domain is then counted as an event named "outbound" followed by the domain.

Which file types count as downloads?

PDF, ZIP, RAR, 7z, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, CSV, TXT, EPUB, MP3, MP4, DMG, EXE and APK files.

Is outbound link tracking GDPR friendly?

Noralytic records only the target domain or the file name and stores nothing on the visitor's device, so no cookie banner is needed for it. Check your overall setup with your data protection advisor.

Does it slow down my website?

No. The main script stays under 1 KB. The extra script of about 1 KB loads only if you switch an option on.

Can I see which page a click came from?

Events are counted per target. Because Noralytic does not follow individuals, an event is not tied to a visitor journey.
