What is an outbound link?

Outbound links, also called external links, point from your website to another one. Examples are a source in an article, an affiliate link or a link to a partner.

A link to a page on your own domain is an internal link. Whether a subdomain counts as external depends on the tool, and in Noralytic a different hostname counts as outbound.

Why Outbound link matters

  • They show which external destinations your audience finds useful.
  • Partners, sponsors and affiliate programs measure your value by their clicks.
  • Dead or unpopular links can be cleaned up.

Practical tips

  • Mark paid or sponsored links with rel="sponsored".
  • Use rel="noopener" for links that open a new tab.
  • Review the most clicked destinations regularly.
