Conversion tracking without code: goals on thank-you pages
The simplest way to measure a conversion is to count visits of the page people see after they convert. This guide shows how to set it up without touching your website's code, and where its limits are.
The idea: count the confirmation page
After a contact form, a booking or an order, most websites show a confirmation or thank-you page. Only people who finished the action reach it, so the number of visits of that page is the number of conversions.
Divide the visits by your visitors and you have a conversion rate, with no code, no tag manager and no cookies.
Page goal or event goal?
| Page goal | Event goal | |
|---|---|---|
| Needs code on your website | No | Yes, one line with pa.track() |
| Works for | Confirmation and thank-you pages | Clicks, buttons, forms without a page of their own |
| Can carry revenue | No | Yes, with value and unit |
| Wildcards | Yes, for example /shop/* | Not applicable |
| Best for | Fast setup | Precise measurement and revenue |
How to set up a page goal
- Find the path of your thank-you page
Submit your own form once and read the address, for example /thank-you. - Open the website settings
Go to the "Goals" section. - Choose "Page visit"
Enter the path and a display name such as "Inquiry sent". - Check the dashboard
Completions and conversion rate appear for the selected period.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Reloads count twice. Use a page that appears once per action, and do not link to it from elsewhere.
- Do not index the thank-you page. A noindex tag keeps search visitors from landing there and inflating the goal.
- Test once. Complete the form yourself and exclude your own IP address so test visits do not count.
- Revenue needs an event. A page has no amount, so use an event with a value for sales.
Frequently asked questions
How do I track conversions without code?
Create a goal of the type "Page visit" in your website settings and enter the path of your thank-you page. Every visit of that page is counted as a conversion.
What is a thank-you page goal?
It is a goal that counts how often the confirmation page after a form or an order is opened.
Can I track a button click without code?
Not as a page goal. For clicks on buttons use an event with pa.track(), or the automatic link and download tracking.
Does conversion tracking need cookies?
No. Noralytic counts page visits without cookies or stored identifiers.
Can I use wildcards in the path?
Yes. A star stands for any characters, for example /shop/* for every page below /shop/.
